Which Engineer Do You Actually Need?
Four different products get sold under the word "engineering." Buying the wrong one is how projects lose months. Find your row.
| Your situation | What you actually need |
|---|---|
| "We have a building program and an architect, but no structure yet." | Full structural design. A firm designs the foundations, framing, and lateral system and produces the sealed calculation and drawing package — the biggest scope, priced from the program and the geotech report. |
| "Our structural drawings and calculations are done; the city wants a licensed seal." | Review and seal — possibly. A licensed PE reviews the work as their own, corrects what fails, and seals what passes. If the design needs real work to pass, it becomes design scope. |
| "The lender, insurer, or AHJ wants an independent check before we build." | Peer review / threshold-inspection support. A reviewing engineer who did not design the work checks the load paths and reports. Standard for hospitals, high-rises, and threshold buildings. |
| "The permit office rejected our structural set." | Correction-cycle engineering. A firm that reads the correction notice, fixes the design (not just the letter), and resubmits. Bring the notice — it is the scope. |
| "We are buying, converting, or adding onto an existing building." | An assessment first. A structural evaluation of what exists — often an ASCE 41 evaluation — before anyone designs anything. Designing against unverified existing conditions is how retrofit budgets die. |
Then, the Discipline
Foundations, framing, and the lateral system → structural, by city. Heating, cooling, power, and water inside the building → an MEP firm. Land, drainage, and utilities → a civil firm. Whatever you choose, verify the license and send a complete RFQ.
Who Publishes This Directory
Published by Apex Grid Engineering PLLC. The firms evaluated and listed on this site today are the publisher's own family of brands — this is an affiliated directory, not a neutral referee. The methodology below is the standard any engineering firm can be measured against, and it is the standard we hold our own firms to in public. Presentation order on this site is the publisher's choice and an experiment in what helps buyers decide — it is not an objective quality verdict, and no firm pays for placement. Coverage claims are limited to licensure the operator's bench actually holds, stated per state. No reviews, ratings, or project claims are published for any firm unless they can be documented — you will find none invented here.

The engineering behind the listed firms is performed and sealed by their licensed PE benches.
