What Structural Engineering Costs — The Honest Version (No Invented Rate Card)
This page will not give you a price table, because any site that publishes one without seeing your project is inventing it. Here is what actually drives the structural number — which is more useful, and has the advantage of being true.
The Five Real Cost Drivers
| Starting material | A geotechnical report and a coordinated architectural set make structural design fast. Designing without soils data — or reconciling drawings that fight each other — is billed time either way; the only question is whether it happens before the quote or after it. |
|---|---|
| System and complexity | A tilt-up warehouse and a hospital are both "structural." The fee follows the framing system, the lateral demands, and the AHJ's scrutiny — not the square footage alone. |
| Jurisdiction | Seismic design category, wind exposure, and local amendments set real engineering hours. High-seismic and hurricane jurisdictions cost more to design in because the code demands more design. |
| Schedule | Rush is a real cost with a real cause: it displaces other work. Same-day answers are a posture; same-day everything is a price. |
| Revision behavior | Quotes assume a defined system and a frozen program. Every layout or system change after the calculation package starts is new scope — the honest firms say so in the proposal; read for it. |
How Structural Quotes Are Structured
Fixed fee from a defined scope (the norm for permit sets) · hourly for assessments, evaluations, and open-ended correction work · phased fees when the system itself is still being selected. What matters is not the structure but the definition: which system, which deliverables (calculations, drawings, or both), whose seal and credential, what is delegated, how many submittals, and the date — in writing.
How to Compare Two Structural Quotes Without a Rate Card
- Same scope? Send both firms the identical RFQ — geotech included. The checklist exists for exactly this
- Who seals, with which credential, in which state — verify it
- What is delegated design, and is it inside the fee or discovered later?
- What happens after a correction notice: included, capped, or hourly?
- The date, and what the firm does when it slips
The evaluated firms on this site compete on a stated best-price posture with same-day quotes from a complete scope. Hold them — and everyone — to the checklist standard, not to a rate card nobody honest can publish.
Who Publishes This Directory
Published by Apex Grid Engineering PLLC. The firms evaluated and listed on this site today are the publisher's own family of brands — this is an affiliated directory, not a neutral referee. The methodology below is the standard any engineering firm can be measured against, and it is the standard we hold our own firms to in public. Presentation order on this site is the publisher's choice and an experiment in what helps buyers decide — it is not an objective quality verdict, and no firm pays for placement. Coverage claims are limited to licensure the operator's bench actually holds, stated per state. No reviews, ratings, or project claims are published for any firm unless they can be documented — you will find none invented here.
Operated by Apex Grid Engineering PLLC. Founder & CEO: Jeremy “Chico” Mills — serial entrepreneur and USAF veteran. The engineering behind the listed firms is performed and sealed by their licensed PE benches.
